Diabetic Facts

  • Type 1 diabetes:The pancreas gland behind your stomach makes little or no insulin(a hormone) due to an inherited problem at birth.

  • Type 2 diabetes:The body doesn't make enough insulin or the insulin doesn't work the way it should.

  • Impaired glucose tolerance (prediabetes):Insulin is made, but isn't working properly.

  • Gestational diabetes:This is diabetes during pregnancy that affects the way the body uses sugar (this increases the risk for type 2 diabetes later in life.

  • Secondary diabetes:Due to the process that either reduce insulin production or insulin usage (for example, pancreatic disease, steroid medication, etc)​

Diabetes Self Management Survival Skills


  • ​Motivation/healthy coping:Learn as much as you can, attend a self management diabetes class and accept support from family and friends.

  • Monitoring blood sugar levels at least twice a day or more frequently if you take insulin.

  • Meal Planning:Control portion sizes and eat the same amount of carbohydrates at each meal.

  • Take the right amount of medication at the right time as instructed by your doctor.

  • Be active:Be cautious about physical activities and consult your doctor if necessary.

St.Anthony's Lifehelp offers diabetes education sessions and a monthly Diabetic Support Group on 2nd Wednesday of each month 2;30-3:30pm (727-920-7910)

Groups & more resources

  • DiabetesSisters:The group accommodates women who are 18 years of age and above living with any type of diabetes.  The organization was 12,000 members and offers both online and in-person programs, such as online forums, articles, webinars, National Conferences, Leadership Institute, and monthly peer support meetups throughout the United States.


  • Tudiabetes: Group provides an online forum for both men and women living with diabetes. It is a California-based non-profit organization that accommodates people with type 1, type 2, as well as gestational diabetes.

  • Genesis Medical Center:The diabetes support group provides a variety of education, in addition, to support to help manage diabetes. Meetings are held monthly and completely without charge.​


  • Union Health:​Union Hospital Diabetes Support Group comprises of those who have diabetes and experiencing issues of diabetes management. Meetings are scheduled on a day to day basis. However, it is open and free for people with diabetes.

Food Tips

  • Include fruits and vegetables.

  • Eat lean protein.

  • Choose foods with less added sugar.

  • Avoid trans fats.

  • Always check the nutrition labels on all food products.(Carbs translate into sugar) So always count carbs and sugars.
